This pulls out the image objects the PDF actually contains, so you get the original resolution. PDF to JPG is the opposite: it renders whole pages, including text, as pictures.
Very small images are ignored, since separators and spacer pixels are noise rather than content. An image that cannot be decoded is skipped rather than failing the whole job.
